چکیده

This paper explores open social learner modeling (OSLM) – a social extension of open learner modeling (OLM). A specific implementation of this approach is presented, by which learners’ self-direction and self-determination in a social elearning context could be potentially promoted. The proposed new approach, multifaceted-OSLM, allows, unlike in previous work, to seamlessly and adaptively embed visualization of both a learner’s own model and other learning peers’ models, into different parts of the learning content, for multiple axes of context, at any time during the learning process. It also demonstrates advantages of visualizing both learners’ performance and their contribution to a learning community. An experimental study showed that, contradictory to previous research, the richness and complexity of this new approach impacted positively on the learning experience, in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction perceived by the learners.

Multifaceted Open Social Learner Modelling

Open social learner modelling (OSLM) approaches are promoted in order to assist learners in self-directed and self-determined learning in a social context. Still, most approaches only focus on visualising learners’ performance, or providing complex tools for social navigation. Our proposal, additionally, emphasises the importance of visualising both learners’ performance and their contribution ...

Investigating Learner Trust in Adaptive Learning Systems

Open learner models (OLM) is an adaptive learning system that externalise the learner model contents to the user. OLMs assist learners in tracking their knowledge, and promote independent learning by offering information about their knowledge that the learner would not usually see (e.g. a breakdown of concept understanding or descriptions of misconceptions held) which may allow learners to iden...

Challenges in Promoting EFL Learners' Autonomy: Iranian EFL Teachers’ Perspectives

Learner autonomy (LA) has always been a controversial issue among applied linguists. Several studies have been carried out to investigate the teachers' and learners' perceptions of learner autonomy as well as the feasibility of learner autonomy. Despite the importance of learner autonomy and the existence of several related studies, the challenges in promoting LA in Iranian institutes to the re...

Aggregation of Qualitative Simulations for Explanation

Qualitative simulations can be seen as knowledge models that capture insights about system behaviour that should be acquired by learners. A problem that learners encounter when interacting with qualitative simulations is the overwhelming amount of knowledge detail represented in such models. As a result, the discovery space grows too large, which hampers the knowledge construction process of th...

The Effect of Predicting Expertise in Open Learner Modeling

Learner’s self-awareness of the breadth and depth of their expertise is crucial for self-regulated learning. Further, of learners report self-knowledge assessments to teaching systems, this can be used to adapt teaching to them. These reasons make it valuable to enable learners to quickly and easily create such models and to improve them. Following the trend to open these models to learners, we...
